They have contracted it to one sentence and expanded it to beyond the length of the novella.

In the vast, varied and vibrant world of current Hindi literature, the work of Uday Prakash is avidly read, much discussed and controversial, especially his fiction. Despite and active career as a journalist, translator, and producer, director and writer for television and film, Uday Prakash has steadily published fiction and poetry for two decades.

This is the second book length collection of Uday Prakash’s stories to appear in English. The first was published in January 2003 by Srishti Publications, Delhi, under the title Rage, Revelry, and Romance, Except for the story Delhi, which appeared in the magazine Eminence and The Sunday Pioneer, none of these stories have appeared previously in English translation.

That which is attractive is also often controversial. Such is the case here. The controversy surrounding the work of Uday Prakash plays out in Hindi literary journals and the Hindi press.

In the literature of the West the short story is generally considered the handmaid of the novel, as the lyric poem is the handmaid of the epic poem. That is not the case in Hindi literature. While excellent novels have been and continue to be written, the short story is still the more vital, lively, experimental and honoured of the two genres. His novels and short stories dealing with the lives of everyday heroes have attained the status of classics. His work continues to be rediscovered and captivates new generations of readers in India and abroad. The inhumanity of caste hierarchies and the plight of women stirred his indignation and remained constant themes through his work.

This omnibus brings together a range of his short stories, a genre he pioneered in Hindi literature, and two of his women-centric novels. Also included is an essay by Premchand on the aim of literature, translated especially for this volume. Francesca Orsini introduces readers to these works in an essay describing Premchand’s impressive craft of reworking contemporary debates in fictional form.

The stories in The World of Premchand, translated by David Rubin, are characterized by compassion for the poor and outrage at the cruelty of the privileged classes. There are vivid and dramatic portrayals of tradition-bound villages and towns, the turmoil of the Independence movement, and the violent clash of new and old ideas. In Widows, Wives and other Heroines, Premchand focuses on the position and role of women, as well as on other socially relevant issues such as middle-class values and aspirations, poverty and the clash between democratic stirrings and a strongly hierarchical society.

The novel Nirmala, translated by Alok Rai, is a classic text of the woman s victim. Nirmala’s father is unable to pay dowry and therefore marries her to an elderly lawyer with three sons. It was originally serialized in a women’s journal and was a huge success in its time, being perceived as a progressive indictment of a corrupt patriarchal society. Gaban, translated by Christopher R King, tells the story of a woman’s excessive love for jewellery and a series of tragic events that unfold as an outcome of her obsession. The people of the country that is just fifty-seven years young were subjected to martial law from 1958 to 1988 and these were times when the military rulers willfully demolished all the institutions and popular notions of democracy.

The imposition of martial law in 1977 emergence of Zia-ul-Haq as dictator and the execution of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto were tragedies that went straight to the hearts of the people. This was the most sorrowful chapter in the country’s history with the never-before onslaught on civil rights and liberties.

This was also the time when poets and writers walked along with the political leaders of the country to fight the gun with the pen. Dreams in the form of forty short stories are encased in Children of the Night and these dreams are of tyranny bred. These dreams the writers bequeath to the generations to come so that they may know that freedom is hard won and not something to be frittered away.

In the times to come these stories will mirror the truth of the times these were written in just as Saadat Hasan Manto’s stories become the source material for the brutal history of the partition. Stories by celebrated writers of resistance literature of Pakistan, Muhammad Mansha Yaad, Mazhar-ul-Islam, Intizar Hussain, Kaleem Lashari, Farkhanda Lodhi, Fakhar Zaman and others, are included in this volume.

Contents

PYGMIES IN UNIFORM

Saeeda Gazdar
The Cuckoo and the General

Qatar Shabbat
The Dacoit

Anwar Zahidi
Death of Another Caesar

WRETCHED OF THE EARTH
Nematuallah Gichki
Such is Life

Anwaar Ahmed
The Broken Heart

Agha Ali Mudassir
Cries of a Cat

Parveen Malik
The Tale of Hunger

Abdullah Jan Jamaldeni
A Poor Man’s Home

WHEN LOVE IS A SIN

Nawaz
The Shade of the Beri

Nurul Huda Shah
We Shall Never Meet Again

Sher Muhammad Mari
The Lunatic

THE JUNGLE AND THE CITY
Ahsan Javed
The Sinking City

Ahsan Wagah
In Meditation

Asad Muhammad Khan
The Lake and the Swine

Enver Sajjad
Endless Journey

CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL
Ilyas Ghumman
The Watchman’s Call

Mahmood Ahmed Qazi
Gogs

Khalida Hussain
The Spider

Mustansar Hussain Tarar
The Octopus

Mazhar-ul-Islam
The Pigeon perched on the Shoulder

AGE OF THE MAIMED
Anwaar Ahmed
First Child Patriot of the city

Mansoor Qaiser
The Patients of Trauma

Masood Asher
Prisoners of Dreams

Mirza Hamid Baig
Released!

JOURNEY THROUGH NIGHT
Gohar Sultana Uzma
Where is the Sun?

Ijaz Rahi
Parteners in Darkness

Intizar Husain
The Fortunate Ones of the Morning

Ahmad Daud
The Patient

Rasheed Amjad
A Cold-blooded Scene

VOICES OF THE DEAD
Fakhar Zaman
A Dead Man’s Tale

Amer Jalcel
The Dead and I

Ismail Gohar
The Godfather

Jamal Abro
The Angel

DO AND DIE
Badar Abro
Ordeal by Fire

Farkhanda Lodhi
The Terrorist

Kaleem Lashari
Mercy Killing

Muhammad Mansha Yaad
The Bucket

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/1048/4393/products/14502_f0b4f720-3c79-4e43-a4f8-b7bc05b7c27c.jpg?v=1625524875
1479-the-best-of-raja-rao-katha-classics
The Best of Raja Rao - Katha Classics

Author: Raja Rao
Editor(s): Makarand Paranjape
Publisher: Katha
Year: 1998
Language: English
Pages: 194
ISBN/UPC (if available): 8185586810

Description

Published to mark his 90th birthday, this Katha Classic has been put together by Makarand Paranjape and offers the choicest sampling of Raja Rao's works ranging from short stories and extracts of novels to nonfiction, richly invested with his understanding of history, politics, and philosophy.

Raja Rao is one of the greatest Indian writers in English and a major figure in twentieth century literature. Starting his literary career as a poet of English, albeit of great promise, he shifted to Punjabi out of deep alignment with Punjab, its language, literature and culture.

Though modern literary forms, short story and one-act play for example, may have originated with his predecessors, they owe their beginning to him. If criticism has come to perform a directive role in interplay with writings in Punjabi, it was largely because he devised it as a creative genre. Included here are his critical articles, covering Punjabi poets of all the eras. Sekhon was also a prolific translator, professing a distinct theory of translation.

Neither literal conversion nor transliteration seemed veritable to him. Samples of his translation also figure in the volume in ample measure in which he seeks to pose a creative tension between Punjabi and English. It marked the emergence of a new literary form out of a long tradition of folklore and oral literature. The expansive oral style was soon displaced by a tight narrative which addressed a literate public.

The stories brought together in this volume will give the reader an insight into the evolution of Oriya short fiction. In the absence of translation they have been deprived from reaching a wider audience. What a waste of beautiful thoughts and ideas! How can one talk of understanding India or being Indian without understanding the motivations that drive our countrymen and women spread over distant regions of the country? Can one truly understand the whole without understanding the part?

What lifts a story from the level of ordinary to extraordinary, to finally become engraved in the mind as a 'Favorite'? Sometimes it is a childhood association or a fond memory of youth. Many times one just does not know why, but one simply likes a particular story.

The Urdu and Punjabi sections did not prove to be difficult. Mr. Khushwant Singh is an authority in these fields. He has included his own translations in this anthology. Making selection from other regional languages proved to be an intimidating task. Some stories and novels as also the poems point to the utter futility of the division of the two communities on religious basis, and the violence that ensued in the wake of the division.

Contents

SINDHI LITERATURE
Sindhi Literature after Independence by Param Abichandani

POETRY
Narayan Shyam
Arjan Shad
Arjan Hasid
Harish Vaswani
M Kamal
Anand Khemani
Vasdev Mohi
Mohan Kalpana
Shyam Jaisinghani
Prem Prakash
Harikant Jethwani
Mahesh Nenwani
Assan Vaswani
Vimmi Sadarangani

SHORT STORY
Sundri Uttamchandani - This City
Nand Lal - Co-Sufferers
K S Balani - Within a Wooden Mould
Vishnu Bhatia - A Coward
Harish Vaswani - The Continuity
Shyam Jaisinghani - Crawling Time
Mohan Kalpana - The Crisis
Satish Rohra - The Relationship
Guno Samtaney - The Ruins
Ishwar Chander - Sometimes
Lal Pushp - Time of Ennui
Haro Shewkani - Portrait of a Father
Rita Shahani - Exasperation
Brij Mohan - The Tail
Harikant Jethwani - The Cell
Gope Kamal - Search for Blood

PLAYS
Mehraj Gurnani - Only a few Symptoms

EXCERPTS FROM ANOVEL
Anand Khemani - Lust of a Man

EXCERPTS FROM AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Mohan Kapana - Hunger, Love and Literature

INTERVIEW
Param Abichandani - A Few Leisurely Moments with Narayan Shyam

LITERARY CRITICISM
Satish Rohra - Factual Truth and Created Truth

Shipping Note: This item usually arrives at your doorstep in 10-15 days

Author: Sarat Chandra Chatterjee
V S Naravane/
Translator: V S Naravane
Publisher: Roli Books
Year: 2002
Language: English
Pages: 224
ISBN/UPC (if available): 8174360301

Description

This volume contains translations of some of the best stories by Sarat Chandra Chatterji, one of the greatest figures in modern Indian literature. There is no verse-a serious omission-but we tried. Hopefully, by next year we’ll know where beat to look for fine, unpublished poetry. This has turned out to be a sizeable volume, and there are still pieces that we had to leave out with great reluctance. The future looks good, through we are constantly, casually told otherwise.

Our attempt has been to put together a collection what will justify the New in the subtitle. As we see it, the true purpose of such an anthology is to showcase emerging talent and writers who have enjoyed acclaim but not as wide a readership as they clearly deserve. We decided, for this reason, not to approach authors who have published more than two books, or hose who have received exceptional notice with their debut works. You will, of course, find a few established authors here, like Andre Beteille, but what is included is their writing in a genre that is completely new to them.

Contents

NON-FICTION

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

LIVING DANGEROUSLY WITH V S NAIPAUL
Manmohan Malthoutra

THE SAHEB OF SIWAN
Saba Naqvi Bhaumix

KYRGYZ ODYSSEY
Mishi Saran

THE WOMAN WHO COULD NOT CARE
Jerry Pinto

THE ALCHEMY OF NOT HAVING
Sankashan Thakur

DIDIMA: THE LAST INGABANGA
Sunanda K Datta-Ray

GOOSE-STEPPING INTO THE SUNRISE
EDNA Fernandes

CUBA DIVING
Naresh Fernandes

THE TIGER IN HIS CAGE
Nirupama Subramanian

THE COLONIAL BIBI
Arpita Das

HOW AMERICA’S WAR ON TERROR RAN OUT OF STEAM
Ajai Shukla

THE DAUGHTERS OF YASIN PAINTER
Smita Gupta

BOARDING SCHOOL
Andre Beteille

NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS

FICTION

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

SIGNS
Anuradha Roy

KOPJES AT SERENGETI
Arun John

THE LAST ANNAL OF ALAMGIR
Ranjit Hoskote

MATUNGA
Uma Mahadevan-Dasgupta

THE FIRST TIME
Paromita Vohra

POST-MORTEM
Indrajit Hazra

WOMAN, LEAF
Mamang Dai

THE OTHER EVENING
Palash Krishna Mehrotra

THE ROAD TO BARABAR
Alban Couto

THE PROPHET
Rana Dasgupta

RED WHITE YELLOW
Mita Ghose

ROUTE 36
Sarnath Banerjee

AFTERLIFE
Mitali saran

WINTER EVENINGS
Navtej Sarna

ZIARAT
Ambarish Satwik

VAAK
Renuka Narayanan

A MOTHER’S DECISION
Ritu Bhatia

NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS

Shipping Note: This item usually arrives at your doorstep in 10-15 days

Author: Rabindranath Tagore
Publisher: Rupa
Year: 2003
Language: English
Pages: 1010
ISBN/UPC (if available): 8129101750

Description

Rabindranath Tagore Omnibus I brings six of the author’s acclaimed works under one roof. It was largely the Gitanjali poems that took the western world by storm and led W B Yeats to comment… (the poems) have stirred my blood as nothing for years…The Post Office, rich in symbolism and allegory and mixing simplicity with sophistication, is hailed as a masterpiece and a world classic. Creative Unity (1922), acclaimed as the finest and wisest of Tagore’s collected essays in English, reveals some of his fundamental tenets of art and aesthetics, of life and religion and of the religion of the poet.

Tagore was the first modern Bengali short storywriter. His Hungry Stones& Other Stories is full of fine tales of mystery and imagination and spun around lovable characters like the Cabulliwallah. Gora, with its epic dimensions and the broad canvas of the social, cultural, religious and political life of the nineteenth century urban middle class Bengal, was a landmark in the history of the Bengali novel. My Boyhood Days, Tagore’s memoir of his childhood days, is an insightful peep into discovering the wonder and delight in the seemingly commonplace experiences that helped him become a great poet.

Contents

Gitanjali

Post Office

Creative Unity

Gora

My Boyhood Days

Hungry Stones and Other Stories

Shipping Note: This item usually arrives at your doorstep in 10-15 days

Author: Saadat Hasan Manto
Khalid Hasan/
Translator(s)/ Editors(s): Khalid Hasan
Publisher: Penguin
Year: 2008/8
Language: English
Pages: 708
ISBN/UPC (if available): 9780143102175

Description

The most widely read and the most translated writer in Urdu, Saadat Hasan Manto constantly challenged the hypocrisy and sham morality of civilized society. Out of this rebellious streak, and fuelled by the burning restlessness of his imagination, he produced a powerful body of work that continues to challenge complacency and demand attention. More than half a century after his death at the age of forty-three in Lahore, he remains anathema to the establishment.

Saadat Hasan Manto wanted to be remembered as the greatest short-story writer ever; as his epitaph would have it, his only competitor is God. Indeed, he is best known for his Partition stories, where he lays bare the absurdity of the religious divide that would forever unhinge the lives of two nations. No other writer has been able to capture the devastation of Partition as Manto has.

But, as this exhaustive anthology shows, Manto’s best work sweeps across genres and states of mind. The short stories shock and seduce; the sketches wring out the sharp brevity of truth; the biographical portraits entice with their candour; the letters to Uncle Sam drip with sarcasm; while the lone play smolders with desire that finds fulfillment in death. Manto also gives us his take on the Bombay film world of his time, a world that both amused and fascinated him and which he recalled with nostalgia in his last years. This collection also carries intimate observations about Manto by his family and friends.

Khalid Hasan’s brilliant translation brings to English Manto’s bite, his lyricism and the authenticity of his voice, making Bitter Fruit the perfect treasury for long-time fans of Manto and first-time readers alike.

MANTO’S PRAYER

Dear God, master of the universe, compassionate and merciful: we who are steeped in sin, kneel in supplication before your throne and beseech you to recall from this world Saadat Hasan Manto, son of Ghulam Hasan Manto, who was a man of great piety.

Take him away, Lord, for he runs away from fragrance and chases after filth. He hates the bright sun, preferring dark labyrinths. He has nothing but contempt for modesty but is fascinated by the naked and the shameless. He will not go near running waters, but loves to wade through filth. Where others weep, he laughs; and where others laugh, he weeps. Faces blackened by evil, he loves to wash with tender care to make visible their real features.
He never thinks about you but follows Satan everywhere, the same fallen angel who once disobeyed you.

Contents

Introduction
SHORT STORIES

A Wet Afternoon
Toba Tek Singh
Colder Than Ice
The Assignment
Mozail
The Return
A Believer’s Version
A Woman’s Life
Perin
Odour
Kingdom’s End
Bribing the Almighty
The Seven Magic Flowers
Upstairs Downstairs
A Man of God
The Gift
The Room with the Bright Light
Siraj
An Old-Fashioned Man
The Angel
By the Roadside
The Wild Cactus
It Happened in 1919
The Price of Freedom
The Woman in the Red Raincoat
The Dutiful Daughter
Three Simple Statements
The Dog of Titwal
The Last Salute
The New Constitution
A Tale of 1947
The Great Divide
Free for All
The Girl from Delhi
Bitter Harvest
A Strange Tale
A Question of Honour
Doing God’s Work
Khushia
A Woman for All Seasons
Babu Gopi Nath
Mummy
The Patch
The Supplication
Green Sandals
The Blouse
On the Balcony
Harnam Kaur
The Man Who Liked to Lose
Night Whispers
Sonaral

DRAMA
In This Vortex

SKETCHES
A Sweet Moment
Wages
Cooperation
Division
Proper Use
The Benefits of Ignorance
For Necessary Action
Miracle Man
Jelly
Invitation to Action
Pathanistan
Warning
Permanent Vacation
The Garland
Out of Consideration
Due Supervision
Determination
Modesty
The Fool
Bestiality
Losing Proposition
Ritualistic Difference
Mishtake
Tidiness
God Is Great
Socialism
Double Cross
Testing Time
Luck
Ungrateful Lot
Precautionary Arrangement
Mistake Removed

PORTRAITS
Jinnah Sahib
Bari Alig: The Armchair Revolutionary
Ashok Kumar: the Evergreen Hero
V.H. All the Feluda stories that Ray wrote are now available together in a two-volume omnibus edition. For the first time, the stories are arranged in chronological order of composition.

This second volume shows Feluda at the peak of his sleuthing career. He is at his inimitable best as he tracks down the last known letter of Napoleon, or investigates a sinister crime that has to do with Tintoretto's painting of Jesus. In The Case of Apsara Theatre, Feluda foils the insidious plans of a clever murderer, and in The House of Death, he investigates the theft of a priceless manuscript. Maganlal Meghraj, Feluda's arch-enemy, reappears in The Criminals of Kathmandu as the kingpin in a case involving spurious drugs, and again in The Mystery of the Pink Pearl, but Feluda is equal to the challenge. Also included here are the two final Feluda cases, Robertson's Ruby and The Magical Mystery, both of which were published posthumously.

Between 1965 and 1992, Satyajit Ray wrote a total of thirty-five Feluda stories, featuring the master sleuth Pradosh C Mitter, his assistant Topshe, and Lalmohan Babu alias Jatayu, a bumbling writer of crime fiction. The locales range from Gangtok and Varanasi to Jaisalmer and Ellora, apart from Feluda's home town of Calcutta. The plots involve murder, intrigue and adventure, narrated in a racy, humorous style. All of this makes for enormously entertaining fare - and it is no wonder that each Feluda book has been a best-seller.

This is the definitive Feluda collection - a treasury that all fans of mystery writing will want to possess.
