Islam believers in one God (their God) but two humanities: the believers and the infidels. Islam teaches Jihad or holy war against the infidels. It is not that the infidels have done any harm to Islam or Muslims but it is simply because holy war against the infidels is established as a divine ordinance, by the word of god, who has said in the Koran, Slay the Infidels. So the believers are at war with the infidels all the time, though, in practice, a war may not be possible at a particular time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor those who know this framework, the chapter of Muslim history which this book discusses is not new; to them, it is an old chapter and also the one which has not yet closed. Hindus have been subjected to these forces for centuries, and these forces continue to operate unabated even now. It has been a poor student of history; it has therefore also neglected its lessons; it has failed to read properly the forces, particularly ideological forces, that have been and are still at work to keep it down. Then again this edition of it is the eleventh of its kind published in English with six in translations in other languages. In the late 1960’s I was well and truly launched as an author, a freelancer who made his living by the pen, and someone always on the lookout for stories to sell. At this time, the surviving members of the conspiracy to kill Mahatma Gandhi has served out their jail terms and were free to tell their stories. I thought I would find out from them why they had participated in the crime and what part they had played.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI could try to get my story published on the 20th Anniversary of the Mahatma’s death.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI was lucky and things went off as I had planned. Then again, those who had themselves participated in the murder plot were only going to tell me what they thought worth revealing. But my real problem was the lack of precision in their knowledge. Some details, which I regarded as vital, were beyond their comprehension. For instance, after close and painstaking questioning, all I had been able to find out about the murder weapon, was that it was a magazine pistol and not a revolver. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNone of them knew.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat was when, almost as an answer to an unsaid prayer, a friend in Delhi who knew of my predicament, Mr. Shankar Nayar of the Indian Police Service, sent me a copy of the Kapur Commission’s published report.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the mid 1960’s, what with the revelations made by some of those involved in the crime, there were persistent allegations that several people in responsible positions in Mumbai had advance knowledge of the murder plot but had failed to report the information to the police. It was the report of the findings of this Commission that my friend had sent me.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNow I had a wide-ranging and penetrating report of the commission and all I had to do was to check out the authenticity of my own findings against those of Justice Kapur.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSure I could still have written my book. But without the help of the Kapur Commission’s report I doubt if The Men Who Killed Gandhi would have turned out to be robust, or lived so long.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe book first came out when the country was in the grip of the ‘Emergency’, and books were subjected to a censorship of the utmost ruthlessness. This made it incumbent upon me to omit certain vital facts such as, for instance, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s secret assurance to Mr. L.B. Bhopatkar, that his client, Mr. V.D. Savarkar had been implicated as a murder-suspect on the flimsiest grounds. After the statement was read in court, its publication was prohibited. A new edition, with a long epilogue by Gopal on the background and the events in prison, was published in 1993 under the more traveling title Why I Assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTo the best of our knowledge, no serious discussion of Godse's speech has ever been published.  For example, in spite of its title and project, B.R. Nanda's book Gandhi and His Critics does not even mention Godse, let alone his self-justification.  There is no such thing as a rebuttal of Godse's argumentation against Gandhi, but there is no sympathizing commentary either.  The Hindu Mahasabha has merely published the speech itself, and some eye-witness have laid down in writing their memories of the atmosphere in court when Godse spoke.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJustice Gopal Das Khosla, one of Godse's judges, and whose sympathies were certainly not with \"Hindu communalism\", has left us this impression: \"The audience was visibly and audibly moved.
