But nuclear weapons gave it a unique, if apocalyptic, dimension of deterrence through mutually assured destruction, aptly called MAD. The Cold War bestowed on it the quality of grand strategy linking as it did, deterrence with arms control and strategic stability.

Thus, while deterrence was pursued through threat of causing grievous hurt vying with annihilation, diplomacy sought to construct a framework where the powerful sought to retain their advantage while pressing for reducing that of the adversary or completely denying it to others. And this came to be termed non-proliferation, keeping its vertical dimension outside any questioning.

Wherever and whenever an adversary required the ability to counter superior capabilities, arms control acquired the shape of strategic stability through diplomatic negotiations. But all this was easier during the bipolar confrontation of the Cold War, and with its end, they lost their original context. To a large extent, the arms control and non-proliferation regime so painstakingly crafted and negotiated during the past five-odd decades started to be obsolescent in the emerging multilateral strategic environment. And, hence, the drift toward unilateralism, whether formally declared or not.

Meanwhile, nuclear deterrence has been undergoing changes due to the increasing vulnerability of states and society in a globalizing and increasingly interdependent world. Recognising the fundamentally political nature of the role of nuclear weapons, China and India evolved an approach to nuclear deterrence quite different from that adopted by others. And they seem to have succeeded equally well so far, with unquestionably lower costs and risks. Written by two leading experts in the field, this book explores the changes taking place in nuclear deterrence and diplomacy at the beginning of the 21st century, especially as they related to India and its security.

Contents

Acronyms

Preface

Defence in a Period of Change

Nuclear Deterrence and Arms Control

The NPT: An Indian Perspective

India’s Stake in the CTBT

FMCT: The Last of Nuclear Arms Control?

Ballistic Missile Defences: Whither Nuclear Deterrence?

Weaponisation of Outer Space

Reducing Nuclear Weapons, increasing Nuclear Dangers

Devaluing Nuclear Weapons: Difficult, But Desirable

Future of Nuclear Deterrence: Credibility and Consequences

Nuclear Doctrine for Defence

Disarmament in India’s Nuclear Strategy

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/1048/4393/products/12545_415cc594-b54d-47fa-ada7-43e8a0fb9287.jpg?v=1625567716
14032-security-beyond-survival
Security Beyond Survival

Author: P R Kumaraswamy
Publisher: Sage Publications
Year: 2004
Language: English
Pages: 281
ISBN/UPC (if available): 0761932682

Description

Since attaining independence, India has traversed a considerable distance in the military and technological arenas. If war is ever to be eliminated, Hinde and Rotblat argue that we must address key issues such as the gap between rich and poor; we must have fully effective arms controls; and above all, we must have better education. That was the day India defied the rest of the world by testing nuclear weapons. The Indian test of five atomic bombs, and the Pakistani tests that answered a few weeks later, marked the end of an arms control system that has kept the world from nuclear war for half a century. But much more important, they signal the re-emergence of something the world hasn't seen since the sixteenth century - modern, technologically adept military powers on the mainland of Asia.

In an unbroken crescent stretching six thousand miles from Israel to North Korea, Asian countries are building missiles and topping them with atomic, biological, or chemical warheads. At a time when it appears that the United States bestrides the world while the nations of Asia are in trouble, he points to a steady and significant shift in the military-technical power balance in Asia's favor. No less than eight Asian nations either have or are striving to possess nuclear weapons and the long-range vehicles to deliver them. Strategic thinkers will benefit from this work but the people who desperately need to read it are those who simply see Asia as a giant trading zone and have never understood its regional rivalries, political ambitions, and growing military capabilities. - - John Le Carre

This sweeping and insightful assessment of the military and technological developments in Asia is provocative and disturbing. It not only expands the scope of how one should think about US strategy and commitments in the Far East, South Asia, and the Middle East, but it also should stir debate about changing security problems that we are unwisely neglecting. - - William E Odom, Lieutenant General USA

A major contribution to what should be an increasingly urgent re-examination of the global security environment for which the US must plan its defense. Bracken argues cogently that American forces and the base structure on which they rely are becoming dangerously inadequate and indeed vulnerable. While the US continues to be the sole superpower, major rising powers such as China, Russia, Japan and India have begun to exert greater influence and challenge the United States in Asia as well as globally.

However, rising powers are not the only American concern. Other challenges include terrorism threat from al-Qaeda and its associates, threat of nuclear proliferation and ‘loose nukes’ in Iran, North Korea, and even Pakistan. Thus the US strategy has to respond to a wide range of perceived threats. Whether the US will remain an active player in the Asian military rivalries or choose to be an offshore balancer will be a key question. These choices have implication for both the Asian stability and the Indian security.

The United States’ commitment to and involvement in the Asia-Pacific in the coming decades is a reality that Washington has firmly come to grips with, given the nature of emerging threats and challenges that it faces. The chapter on the 1857 Uprising, which has attracted considerable debate and scholarly dissertations from historians and academicians alike, is covered in much detail by the author as also the unification in 1895 of the three Presidency Armies, of Bengal, Bombay and Madras, into the Indian Army.

The year 1905, according to the author, was very significant in regard to the Indian Army for that was the year the Viceroy, Lord George Curson, resigned after a bitter policy dispute with the Commander-in-Chief in India, Lord Horatio Kitchner. Thereafter, the long overdue Indianization of the commissioned ranks took place mainly in response to nationalist demands. With the second World War, further sequential Indianization occurred. In the section on Independent India, the author takes a detailed look at the accession of the Indian States; the partition disturbances; conflicts with Pakistan and China; the aid to civil operations including Operation Bluestar, and various peace-keeping operations including in Sri Lanka.

Contents

Acknowledgements

Foreword

Prologue

List of Abbreviations

Early Beginnings
The Presidency Armies in War Before 1857
Some Alleged Mutinies In The Three Presidency Armies Before 1857
Civil Disturbances And The Use Of Troops In Aid Of The Civil Power
Before 1857
The 1857 Uprising And Its Prelude
The Presidency Armies Under The Crown And Their Unification (1858-1895)
The Kitchener Era And the Kitchener-Curzon Dispute
The Indian Army In the First World War
Political Movements And The Indian Army In The First World War
The Myth Of The Martial Race Dogma
Indianization and The Indian Army Between The World Wars
The War Years (1939-1945)
The Indian National Army (INA) Or The Azad Hind Fauj
Partition, Independence And The Accession Of States
Post-Independence - The Nehru Years
The Post-Nehru Years
Epilogue

Appendices

Notes And References

Select Bibliography

Index

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/1048/4393/products/2767_e917f357-aaed-4d3c-b9a9-49c4408ee31d.jpg?v=1625570813
27110-security-in-a-complex-era-emerging-challenges-facing-india
Security in a Complex Era : Emerging Challenges Facing India

Author: Neli Padukone
Foreword/Introduction: General V P Malik
Publisher: Knowledge World
Year: 2010
Language: English
Pages: 147
ISBN/UPC (if available): 93-80502-12-5

Description

This book is a horizon scan of conceptual shifts in the nature of conflict. As Asian states grow richer and more developed, they are accumulating military power as a way of securing themselves. China has one of the most dynamic economies in the world today. But Chinas military power is also growing. Chinese military modernization has had cascading effects not just in Asia but also in global terms. This has serious consequences for Asian stability.

Chinas military modernisation would directly impact on the region, particularly on countries like India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Similarly, as India modernises its forces, there would be almost simultaneous enhancement of defense capabilities by Pakistan. In addition, there are external powers such as the US whose military power also impacts on the region. This book addresses the increasingly tense strategic situation in Asia as these major powers interact and react to each other.

COMMENTS:

“Clashing Titans” is a valuable interpretation of strategy played by global, regional and local powers in Asia where some fiercely complete and some work hard to gain acceptance but all with a common theme towards serving their respective ‘National Interest.’ Rajeswari points at the possibilities of these ‘interests’ becoming a threat to peace and stability that may lead to military action.
--- Air Chief Marshal Krishnaswamy former Chief of Air Staff, Indian Air force, from 2001to 2004.

It is now widely agreed that Asia has become the core of the emerging global system. Yet, oddly, there have been few efforts to synoptically survey the military capabilities of the major Asian powers. Rajeswari Rajagopalan’s survey of Asian military strategies goes a long way towards filling that gap. It provides a clear and concise survey of one of the key dimensions of military power affecting Asian stability in the future, and its limpid analysis makes it valuable to policymakers, scholars, and laymen alike.
--- Ashley J.
