 Indiaclub.com Description

The sophistication and cadences of Gulzar's work come alive in this bilingual selection of some of his best poetry, sensitively translated by Pavan K Varma.

Gulzar, one of India' finest film-makers and lyricists, has always been a poet at heart. His oeuvre is steeped in a poetic sensibility, marked by a lyricism rare in the world of Hindi cinema. Born in 1834, Gulzar's journey as a poet began with the Progressive Writers' Movement. Today, he is regarded as one of India's foremost Urdu Poets, unparalleled in his exploration of human relationships and the insights and sensitivity with which he addresses the many facets of daily life.

Whether evoking an abiding nostalgia for yesterday (The Heart Seeks), lamenting the lack of time to spend with a beloved (A Day to Spend), or composing an elegy for a tree uprooted by a storms (Amaltas), Gulzar poetry reflects his keen observation of life and the environment around him.

Without in any way compromising on artistry or lyricism, his poems incorporate the mundane and the everyday to create vivid images, like in Clothes, where the act of washing and drying clothes becomes a metaphor for a relationship gone wrong, or Monsoon which draws an unforgettable parallel between the rainwater gushing through streets and young children returning home victorious in a match.

 About the Author

GULZAR is one of Indian cinema’s most sensitive and creative directors; a lyricist par excellence; one whose work never fails to surprise, bring a tear to the eye or a smile on the lips; a humble man with humble beginnings who is unafraid of experimenting. A career that began more than three decades ago comprises a rich repertoire of not just films, but also authoring several anthologies of short stories, including Raavi Paar and Other Stories. One of the two immensely popular television serials that he has directed has been on the life of Mirza Ghalib, who commands Gulzar’s heartstrings, and the most recent one is based on the works of one of Indian literature’s greats, Munshi Premchand. Winner of the Sahitya Akademi award, Gulzar’s interest in literature is more than just a passing fancy. He writes poetry, short stories, all his works have been translated into English, and he is the creator of the three-line poem, called Triveni. Writing for Gulzar, is his first love, his passion, his junoon, his life breath!
